Students played a pivotal role in establishing community radio in Australia. 3CCC, a defunct radio station based in Castlemaine VIC was partially built and founded by students at the Bendigo CAE (now La Trobe Uni Bendigo). The collegians ran student shows, news shows, and played various technical roles. They clashed occasionally with the older station management over issues of censorship - not everyone at the station was as progressive as those hip young kids at BCAE. There were also several active shows reserved for local high school students.
3CCC eventually lost its licence in the 2000s for boring legal reasons, but before that it had already embraced a conservative format, featuring few young people and little alternative content.
Today, there is no youth or student station in Bendigo.
