A logo from 1985 I really like.
In the 80s, the station rebranded to “University Radio” rather than “Student Radio”.
This period also featured the brief slogan “3MU: University of Sound”.
Rebrands were common in 3MU’s history as boards turned over and priorities changed.
In the 80s, the station was trying to go legit, and they considered that their best bet would be to team up with the University (not that the University was that keen).
In the 90s, they focused on “Student” Radio, and had to deal with the abstract issue “What is a student?” in their involvement with Melbourne Student Radio.
In applying for a permanent licence in 2001, they rebranded from 3MU to 3MR “Monash Radio”, to indicate that they represented the Monash community at large, not just students.
In 2006, they rebranded again to “DIY Radio”, embracing their independent nature as an asset, not something to settle for.
Today, Radio Monash is once again part of the Student Association, but still has a provision in their Constitution for non-student members.
Student Radio, Community Radio, University Radio… What do you think?
