PERTH STUDENT RADIO 1989 - Catch the Beat on 6NR radio's "Late Nite", student radio all night! Late Nite was a powerful part of the alternative scene in Perth. Catch the Beat was one of Late Nite's most popular shows, frequently hosting its own "House Parties" or massive live DJ sets and a major contributor to Late Nite's own (but short lived) magazine, "Vortex".
Quick history - Late Nite was hosted by students at WAIT or the Western Australian Institute of Technology, which is now Curtin University. 6NR also evolved into Curtin Radio, which is still broadcasting, still on campus, but is now a station with virtually no youth involvement. How did a station that was crackling with electric experimental and hot alternative shows end up a middle-of-the-road, easy listening station? This is one of the questions I'll try to answer in the book.
Pictured is Curtis Brown, student radio director of Late Nite for a long time during his studies and now a Curtin Radio employee, who holds the title for the world's greatest smile.
