Radio is in the air...PBS released their history book last year, celebrating 40 years of alternative music and content in Melbourne. In my book, I will provide a focused account of the youth involvement that sparked the creation of PBS in the late 70s, and the particularly interesting shows lead by under 18s.
PBS is one of the alternative stations that maintained its high level of youth involvement over the years, while other formerly alternative community stations saw their content age into "easy listening" or middle-of-the-road formats. PBS lives on after 40 years with listeners of all ages and an active role in Melbourne's live music scene.
Pictured is a terrible photo of me at the book launch, wearing the shirt I got when I volunteered for Rock-A-Bye Baby - volunteering at PBS was one of my first experiences with community radio. 🤙
